Is an older racket better value?
A new model doesn’t make last year’s a worse racket. Compare the exact racket, its condition and the full cost before you decide.
Buy the older model when
- You’ve played that generation and like it.
- It’s available in your grip size.
- It’s still cheaper once you’ve added strings, stringing and delivery.
- If it’s used, you can see it in person or get clear photos.
Try it first when
- You’ve never hit with that model.
- The versions differ in weight, balance, head size or string pattern.
- The listing is vague about the generation or condition.
- You need a matching pair and only one is available.
Compare the full cost
Is it new, used or an ex-demo? Does it come strung? Add any restringing, a new grip and delivery.
For a used racket, compare what the same model in similar condition has actually sold for. An asking price is only a hope.
Check the exact version
- Model name and generation or year.
- Head size, string pattern and weight before strings.
- Grip size.
- Condition of the frame, bumper and grommets on a used racket.
